Belconnen Community Service "Interagency Meeting".
On Tuesday August 31 I attended the Interagency Meeting on behalf of the Council.
The theme of the meeting discussion was "Sport and Community Development" with an emphasis on children and Youth.
The first presentation: Soccer for Life by Tim Skinner of U Turn Youth Services reported on a games day for some 170 local Soccer players which was also attended by 7 health services invited to reinforce the relationship between sport and health.
The success of the sports day will ensure future events.
The second presentation: The Australian Drug Foundation's - Good Sports Program by Andrew Prentice and John Reid explained a promotion by the Foundation of Alcohol in Sports and the associated responsibilities.
The third presentation: Breaking Down Barriers between Police and Youth through sport by Constable Adrian Edge of the AFP Crime Prevention Unit outlined the efforts of the AFP to encourage youth to participate in sport and the expected benefits.
Woodsmoke
Hi Shirley
For your and the BCC's information attached is the TCC submission on woodsmoke. I represented BCC at the meeting chaired by the Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water on woodsmoke. At that meeting I stated that while Tuggeranong had particular problems associated with their topography, woodsmoke was a wide-ranging problem and hence BCC supported the broad thrust of TCC's presentation (which was less detailed than their attached submission).
If BCC agrees I would like a TCC supportive statement to be sent to David Power and a copy cc'd to Darryl Johnston. The supportive statement could be along the lines of: "While we are aware that Tuggeranong has particular problems associated with their topography, woodsmoke is a wide-ranging problem for those with breathing difficulties and other health impairments and hence BCC supported the broad thrust of TCC's submission".
Belconnen Town Centre Parking: Radio Interview 666 ABC Canberra
Here is the audio [9MB] of the interview by Alex Sloan, 666 ABC Canberra, with Brian Rhynehart on 9 June 2010.
The topic is about car parking at the Belconnen Town Centre during the current renovations to the Town Centre.
Submissions for Regional Development Australia
Regional Development Australia ACT (RDA ACT)
RDA ACT is the local organisation within a new national program to replace the Commonwealth Area Consultative Councils & State Regional Development Boards. Whereas the former Capital Region ACC & the Capital Region Development Board had a broader coverage RDA ACT, as a joint initiative of the Commonwealth & ACT governments, primarily covers the ACT only. Other RDAs cover the rest of the capital & coastal regions.
RDA ACT has been established to:
(a) ‘Provide advice to the Australian & ACT governments about regional issues;
(b) Provide strategic input into Australian & ACT government programs;
(c) Provide information to ACT & regional communities on Commonwealth & ACT government initiatives;
